What Is Matcha Powder?

Matcha is made from green tea leaves that grown in matcha harvest regions in Japan. The finest leaves are ground into a powder after being shade grown.

Matcha is a vibrantly green and finely powdered green tea, originating from Japan. It is a full-bodied tea where you consume the entire leaf in its powdered form, as opposed to your usual teas found in tea bags.

Whilst it was traditionally used in tea ceremonies (where the preparation, serving and drinking of matcha is very important), Matcha also possesses notable health benefits and is rich in antioxidants, fibre and chlorophyll. It has a unique rich taste, encompassing vegetal and astringent flavors, followed by a natural sweet after taste.

The nutrients found in 1 cup of matcha tea is equivalent to 10 cups of steeped green tea. The high levels of antioxidants (137 times more than green tea) help boost the immune system. Matcha is also known to be good for energy and focus and will boost your metabolism, making is very popular as a natural weight management aid.

Both Matcha and other green tea varieties come from the same plant Camellia Sinensis. Our Matcha is produced using both modern and traditional methods.

  • First, the Matcha leaves are grown in the shade to reduce the exposure to sunlight, thereby increasing the strength of chlorophyll, L-theaine and boosting antioxidant levels. This process also gives the Matcha leaves the vibrant green colour, sweet aftertaste and notable nutritional content.
  • The leaves are then handpicked, steamed to prevent oxidation, air dried, de-stemmed, and are ground into fine powder with granite stone mills. This final product is what is known as Matcha.

You may be wondering, why is your matcha not organic?

Traditional Japanese Matcha has been non-organic for years. Organic matcha farming was only a recent development since matcha became popular in the Western world. The Japanese are serious about their tea, and as such, enforces strict regulation upon tea farmers.

In Japan, tea leaves are all tested for chemical residue before being put on the market. Even a little over the safety standard would make it barred from sale.

We searched far and wide to find the highest quality matcha that would not only be vibrant green but also beneficial for your health.
